Family Law (21 / 30 Hours)*
Note:
*30 hours of family law training is required by the Ontario Ministry of the Attorney General for anyone providing Parenting Coordination and Family Arbitration services. As well, the Riverdale Mediation Internship Program requires applicants to have at least 30 hours of family law training.

Course Title: Screening for Power Imbalances and Domestic Violence (21 hours)

Course Date: March 29, 20, 31, 2017

Course Location: Guelph, Ontario

Description: This is a 21-hour course on power imbalances and domestic violence. Training will cover how to screen for power imbalances and abuse; how to determine when mediation or arbitration is or is not appropriate; what tools and techniques to use for screening; and safeguards for your ADR processes. Screening for Family Violence, Abuse and Power Imbalances (21 Hours)

Course Date: April 24, 25 & 26, 2017

Course Location: (venue) Chestnut Conference Centre – Toronto, ON

Description (Max 100 words): Understanding the sources of negotiation power is critical for effective family mediation, collaborative practice and negotiation. This course is mandatory for family arbitrators and parenting coordinators, and must be repeated every 5 years unless you have done 10 cases in that time. The course is also for mediators seeking accreditation. Speakers, co-trainers, skilled coaches and professional actors supplement the lectures. Case studies, role plays and exercises are designed to teach family law professionals how to identify, assess and manage risk and power imbalances in their practices. This workshop will be facilitated by Hilary Linton and Elizabeth Hyde.

Mediation Beyond the Basics

Description: Take your mediation skills to a new level. This second level course builds on the skills and techniques taught in our basic mediation course. Small group coaching is provided so that participants have the opportunity to apply the concepts to the reality of resolving conflict.

Participants will:

  • Develop skills to manage the emotional climate.
  • Build assertion and other communication skills critical for a conflict resolver.
  • Develop strategies for roadblocks.
  • Apply the mediation model in typical conflict situations.

Advanced Family Mediation

Course Date: May 8, 9, 10, 2017

Course Location: Guelph, Ontario

Description: This is a 21-hour course on advanced family mediation. Training will cover advanced family mediation topics, including the voice of children in family mediation, working with high conflict families, process design for families with special requirements, mediator ethics, blended and step-parent mediation, and other challenging areas. Course Location:  Waterloo, Conrad Grebel University College, affiliated with the University of Waterloo (some workshops held in Toronto)
Description: This unique professional development program, offers 1 – 7 day(s) length workshops in Conflict Management and Mediation.  Individual workshops can be taken for interest only or complete a certificate (minimum 133 hours) which can fulfil the educational component for an ADRIO Qualified Mediator or Chartered Mediator application.  Elective topics include Conflict Coaching, Commercial Mediation, Peacemaking Circles Training and Narrative Mediation.  We partner with Agree Inc., to offer Dispute Resolution Level 1 & Level 2, as the ADRIO approved 40 hour workshop required for membership.  All trainers are experienced practitioners in their subject area.
