Section Events

About Jason Pedlar
Jason Pedlar is running for Toronto City Council in Ward 2. He is currently a Mediator at the Financial Services Commission of Toronto (FSCO). He is also an instructor at Ryerson University. He is an Associate at Agree Inc. and an instructor at Reconcilable Differences. Previously, he was the Director of the Centre of Conflict Resolution Studies at the University of Prince Edward Island. Jason holds a M.A. in Conflict Analysis & Management from Royal Roads University, a certificate in Dispute Resolution from York University, and a B.A. in Psychology

Restorative Justice Section Meeting

Topic: Restorative Processes creating Safer Schools
Guest Speaker: Lynn Zammit, Restorative Justice Project Co-ordinator, Waterloo Region District School Board

About the Topic:
Are we doing all that can be done to make our schools safe for all of our children? What restorative programs are already in place and how are they working?
Restorative / Transformative Justice is a way of looking at conflict that focuses on capacities, needs, obligations, healing and forgiveness. It acknowledges that harm has been done but uses this as a catalyst for change. It is the business of rebuilding healthy relationships and healthy communities. The Waterloo District School Board is seen as a leader in restorative programs, and as the Co-ordinator of the Restorative Justice Program at the Board, Lynn has seen students reflect on the impact of their actions instead of being suspended, has provided training to the Waterloo Region Police Services and is working closely with the Attorney General and several District School Boards to implement best practices around Safer Schools.
Lynn has worked in the area of safe schools for over 25 years. She established Canada’s first education-based restorative justice conferencing model and has co-authored two books on RJ. One of the many awards Lynn has received for her transformative work is the Victim Services Award of Distinction, Ministry of the Attorney General’s office for her work with youth.
